The Parque Provincial Cumbres Calchaquíes (PPC Calchaquíes, in spanish), created in 1965, is located mostly in the department of Tafi del Valle, west of the province, and to a lesser extent in the department of Trancas and Tafi Viejo. Within it, private properties and a significant portion belonging to the indigenous community of Amaicha del Valle are included. This Park, of approximately 80,000 hectares, covers the entire area above 3000 m asl of the Cumbres Calchaquíes mountain range, from the valley of Tafí to the border with the province of Salta, to the north. It protects high Andean environments and the upper limit of the mountain forests (Yungas). A smaller sector is lower, up to 2000 m asl in the extreme north, incorporating grasslands and alder woods.
